I think I left my kneecap somewhere back in Quebec though. I am quitting the bike riding here unfortunately. I still have a week to go of my vacation, so I have rented a car to get to Halifax so I can site see a bit, maybe do some hiking. The knee seems fine for walking activities.

Anyway, a bit dissapointing, but at least I made it this far.

Grand Falls, NB

So I have ridden a little over 1000 km now across Quebec and into New Brunswick. Unfortunately my knee started acting up about 250 km ago. Something different then before. The pain comes and goes, and is not debilitating like the injury a couple of years back. I am taking a day off here to rest, and then am going to try to get down to Saint John, by stretching the timeframe to 4 days of 80 km per day. From there I catch a ferry to Digby, and then 3 days of 80 km per day to Halifax. At that rate I have time to take one more day of rest (likely the day I catch the ferry).

Riding through Quebec was beautiful, however the hills are incredibly steep. There is no such thing as a cut or fill through the mountains, the roads just go straight up the sides. Downhill at 16% grade is a lot of fun, but somewhat scary as you hit 80 km/h with a loaded bike. Uphill is a knee grinder, which is what did me in.

New Brunswick so far is somewhat depressing. It appears that the main highway was rebuilt some time back, so the deserted road I take (I presume the old highway) is just a wasteland of abandoned gas stations, decrepit motels, and other closed businesses. Everything is for sale... probably really cheap. Grand Falls is the first place that I have been able to speak English to people in a while, and is somewhat more alive than the rest of the province that I have seen so far. Although I took a beer in a bar that had no one in it but me, the bartender, and a bored looking cook.

Well tomorrow is onward towards Fredricton. We shall see how that goes.

A wee bit extra.

Wednesday - Sep 5 - Biking 35 km, Hiking 5 km

Rode up to Wakefield. Had a quick snack, then rode back through Gatineau Park up to the Champlain lookout. Feeling great. In the last seven days I have ridden 557 km. I feel ready for this trip now... leaving on Friday. This remainder of this week is going to be rest so this is probably the final entry until I get back.

Rode to work. The boss kicked us out early so I rode to the base of the Pink Lake hill, and then looped home via the bike path. Rode down to Sharon's house and went to supper with her. Rode home much later.

Saturday - Sep 1 - Biking 146 km

Rode south to Burrits Rapids. Took the eastern side of the river after passing Kemptville. Stopped at the locks for a break. Rode up Dwyer Hill road all the way to Flewellyn, where the traffic was really annoying for some reason. Turned back towards Richmond at Stittsville, and a relief from the traffic. Then rode straight home from Richmond. Rode a couple errands around town in the afternoon.

Sunday - Sep 2 - Biking 69 km

Rode the Gatineau Park loop counter-clockwise. Rode down to Amber's house to borrow Rob's car to run some errands. Then rode some more errands on my way back home.

Rode to work on a gray and dreary morning. It got nice by the time I left so I decided to take a slightly longer route home. I had no time to do a really long route because I was meeting my parents for supper. Anyway, rode out Teron road to the pedestrian/bike bridge over the Queensway, then rode to Bells Corners via Timm. I was flying quite fast along Timm and spotted what appeared to be a nice looking hunting knife on the side of the road. After it had registered in my brain, I stopped turned around and biked back to it. It turned out to be a plastic toy knife that had been slightly chewed by a dog or kid. Left it there and continued home.

Storm Cancelled Ride

Wednesday - Aug 29 - Biking 35 km

Got up early and rode westward through Carp, and off via Donald B. Munro all the way to Dwyer Hill road. Looped back through Galetta where I stopped at the bottom of the hydro dam for a snack. Continued past Fitzroy Harbour then back east towards Constance Bay. Road partially into Constance Bay, then consulted the map and realized that there was no way out other than the way I came in so turned around. Rode back to a small park along the river and had lunch on the beach which was deserted except for a single sailboat that decided to drive right up to where I was sitting and then spent the entire time driving around in circles right in front of me. A little annoying. Rode home and arrived just before it started raining. Later I rode down to the Parkdale market to stock up on fresh vegetables.

Sunday - Aug 26 - Biking 30 km, Hiking 10 km

Rode out to Jack Pine trail and met Dipna. We hiked around the Jack Pine trail, through the Lime Kiln area to Stony Swamp, and then back around the north loop of the Jack Pine area.

Rode to work. It was very cold and rainy on the way home. Was wishing that I had brought a sweater.

Saturday - Aug 18 - Biking 105 km

Rode out to Burrits Rapids, then looped up Dwyer Hill Road to Munster and finished in Richmond at Peter and Katie's. Was a beautiful morning, a little cool when starting but gradually warming up as I went. Stopped for lunch in Marlborough forest. Arrived at Peter's at about 13:00, had a brief rest and then we loaded up his fireplace and my bike into his truck. Drove it over to my house and then unloaded into my garage. Then loaded my fireplace into the truck. We both now have fireplaces we like.

Sunday - Aug 19 - Biking 75 km, Hiking 2 km

Rode the Gatineau Parkway loop clockwise to take advantage of the Sunday road closure and the nice weather. I arrived up on the lookout to a deserted area. I guess 9:00 is too early for most people. Road down to Bank street to meet Sharon, and then went for a short hike up around King Mountain with a group of people.

The last 5 km had my left hip in some sort of strange pulsating shooting pain scenario. This was pretty minor and bearable, but continued right to the point at which I went to bed.

Wire

Monday - Aug 13 - Biking 47 km

Rode to work. Took the Mikado, expecting to go for a ride afterward but decided to put more miles in tomorrow instead. After supper rode down to Canadian Tire and Home Depot to purchase some wiring components for the shop machinery. Yikes is copper wire ever expensive these days! Over four bucks a meter for 12/3! Rode home with a big coil of wire strapped to my back. With the copper thieves/scavengers that are so prevalent these days I kept having the feeling that I was going to get mugged for my wire. Fortunately I did not and made it home safely.

Weekend of resting.

Friday - Aug 10 - Biking 63 km

Rode to work. Rode up to Pink Lake on the way home for some extra miles. Island park was barricaded on the way home for a bridge repair, so rode through Hampton Park over to Kirkwood. Legs seem to have fully recovered now. Even so, it is going to be a light riding weekend due to the number of miles I rode earlier in the week.

Saturday - Aug 11 - Biking 21 km

Rode down to Lee Valley with the trailler in extended mode and picked up a bunch of components for a wood rack. Rode down to Westboro for some groceries at the Parkdale market, Herb and Spice, and the bagel shop.

Sunday - Aug 12 - Biking 9 km

Rode down to Cozy's for breakfast with Rob and Amber. Rode by the bridge construction site on the way home for a gander.

I am very envious of her shop which is built out of a 19th century log house. Very nice ride out that way up second line road. Rode home after dark which was fun. Rode north up the Gatineau parkway and then up to Wakefield. Stopped for lunch in the park, then rode home, this time stopping up at the Champlain lookout. The ride down from Champlain, which is normally easy as it is all down hill was very difficult. My legs were very sore from the climb. This is a change from last week where I felt very strong. Mind you, I rode farther, but I will be riding much more than this when I set out towards Halifax next month. Got home, rested for a couple hours, then rode a few km's around doing errands. My legs are very sore now. I do not have time for a rest day until Thursday, so I hope I can actively recover the next couple of days.

Eastern Loop

Friday - Aug 3 - Biking 36 km

Rode to work. Rode home, accompanied by Mike for most of the route.

Saturday - Aug 4 - Biking 127 km

Rode an eastern loop. Started down the Rockcliffe parkway, continuing on the closed section, which is freshly paved. At one point I hit a bump while crossing a bridge that did not feel right. Rode on down the road for another km and then stopped for a quick break. I noticed that one of my water bottles was missing. I rode back to the bumpy bridge and there was my bottle sitting in the middle of the road. Continued through Orleans and pursued a couple of touring cyclists for several km before catching up with them. Wanted to chat, but just as I passed another dude showed up and had already engaged in conversation, so I just said Hi as I rode past. Turned south on a promising road, but it soon turned to gravel. Continued anyway and found another paved road that also turned to gravel. Continued anyway again until I got onto some more major roads. Stopped in Vars for lunch in the Lions club park. The final 30 km were very tiring. I had not intended to ride as far as I did, but did it anyway.

It was starting to get dark so decided to wait for another day.

King Mountain

Monday - Jul 30 - Biking 77 km

Rode to work on the Mikado so I could do a longer ride on my way home. Stopped at Cliff's place to drop off the keys for House 1, and close off that burden for good. Left work around 17:00 and picked up a staple in my rear tire after a few km. Stopped and fixed this, then continued, crossing the Champlain bridge and then rode up the Gatineau Parkway to the top of King Mountain. I wanted to ride all the way to the lookout, but decided to turn around at King so I could be home before darkness set in. Traffic in the park was dead. I think I will try to ride up here on the weekdays more often. I am also suprised that my legs show no signs of soreness after the past few days of riding. Well, no pain is good news. I will keep on trucking with the training plan. Just over a month left to go.

Metric Century

Friday - Jul 27 - Biking 46 km

Rode to work... another nice sunny day. Rode home, then rode down to house 1 to install a smoke detector on the second floor. Locked it up for the final time. Rode down to Ilona's for a BBQ, some swimming, and some beer drinking with her and Amber. Rode home relatively early.

Saturday - Jul 28 - Biking 115 km

Rode out Cedarview road all the way to Century, through North Gower than out towards Burrits Rapids. Looped around via Malakoff. Was a light drizzle when I started, but the rain got steadily harder as I rode. It was very warm however, so I did not bother with rain gear. I stopped for a snack under some shelter at a church along Century road. Stopped for lunch along Malakoff, and donned my rain gear to escape the Mosquitos. Ate quickly in the rain and then continued. Rode through Richmond and paid a quick visit to Katie and her new baby Justin. The rain stopped while I was here, so I began to dry out as I rode home. Later in the evening I rode down to Irene's pub to see some bands.

Sunday - Jul 29 - Biking 46 km

Rode down to Westboro to get groceries. Rode later out to Canadian tire to look at ladders, then to the India food mart to pick up samosas, then to Home Hardware to get some keys cut. Rode out to my Aunt Hilda's place for a family reunion BBQ, and then home later in the evening.

Rode to work in an absolute downpour. Would probably not have ridden if not for; one, I need the mileage, and two, I needed to run some errands on the way home, and the bus is not too suitable when you need to make various stops. Very few others were riding. I encountered another cyclist at a downed tree over the Watt's creek pathway. Together we shoved it over to clear the road. Thankfully it had stopped raining for the ride home. Stopped at house 2 to pick up a screwdriver bit for my drill driver so I could disassemble my bed. Stopped at the India food mart and Loeb to pick up food to feed the crew for the move tomorrow.

Saturday - Jul 21 - Biking 11 km

Got up early and rode down to John's restaurant for a quick breakfast as all my dishes and cookware were packed in boxes. Rode to house 2, then to Tim Horton's to pick up donuts for the move crew. Rode back to house 2, then walked down to Discount to pick up the moving truck. The rest of the day was spent moving.

Sunday - Jul 22 - Biking 90 km

Got up early to return the truck, then decided, despite being really tired from yesterday, I would go for a long ride. Rode the Specialized around the Gatineau parkway loop in a beautiful sunny day with no wind. Continued through Hull and rode across the Alexandria bridge. I took the bike lane which was a big mistake as this has deteriated to the point of being unridable. Unfortunately, once you commit, there is no way back onto the road until you finish the crossing so I endured the teeth and bone chattering ride until mercifully I reached the other side. Rode out on the Rockcliffe parkway, expecting it to be closed to motor vehicles for Sunday, but unfortunately was not, with traffic being somewhat heavy. At the aviation museum, the parkway was closed to all traffic due to construction, and a sign indicated that Sunday Bikedays are cancelled until mid-August... nice to inform you of the fact at the end. Anyway, was getting tired here so I had a quick granola bar break and watched the planes take off, and then road home... home now being house 2.

Rode to work on the first really nice day in a while. i.e. No threatening storm clouds in the sky. Rode home, stopping by the new house to close the windows and remove the masking tape from the basement walls.

Tuesday - Jul 17 - Biking 55 km

Rode to the Brookstreet Hotel for a Mentor Graphics verification seminar. Rode home for a quick supper, then down to re-Cycles for a shift. Rode home.

More basement renovation.

Friday - Jul 13 - Biking 56 km

Bike to work in a downpour. Biked home in much nicer weather, stopping at The Healthiest Home for advice on how to get carpet glue off of a floor safely. They recommended a citrus based solvent. Rode to house 2 with a load of stuff, then to Home Depot to search for citrus based solvent. Found some called "Carpet Adhesive Remover" so bought a gallon. Rode back to house number 2 and spread this out on the floor. Probably should have bought 2 gallons, but managed to get a reasonable amount of the glue off of the floor. After a large clean up, rode back to house 1 around midnight.

Saturday - Jul 14 - Biking 14 km

Rode to house 2 and further prepped the floor by washing with TSP and then lots of water. Rode back home. Rode to Tom's for a housewarming of his new apartment.

Sunday - Jul 15 - Biking 63 km

Rode to house 2 to paint the floor. Hopefully one coat will suffice. As I could no longer access my tools on the other side of the basement, rode home, had lunch, then took the Specialized out for a spin around the Gatineau Parkway. Traffic was fairly heavy, but pretty much an even mix of cars and bicycles.

The blades were just tossed into the bottom of the trailler box. At one point I heard the metallic clanking of a blade bouncing down the road. I pulled over and went back to retrieve it. Rode to work carrying back the broken tiller extension, plus the newly manufactured replacement part. This time I had bungee cords so carried the pair in a much safer manner. Left work and biked by the new house to make sure it was still there. It was but I could not see much as there was a huge moving truck parked directly in front obscuring the view. Rode to the lawyers office to sign a million papers and hand over my entire life savings expressed on a single sheet of paper. Rode home, discovering the house pretty much completely emptied... Emily has officially moved out. Felt somewhat depressed. Rode down to the Oak to meet Dave, Rob, Amber, Ilona, and a whole bunch of other people. Drank some beers and felt much better. Rode to work. Rode home carrying a broken piece of wood which is the tiller extension for Igor's sailboat. I didn't have any bungy cords with me so just threaded it through the panier webbing. Since this oriented the board cross ways, I had to be careful with side clearance as it stuck out significantly on each side of my bike.

Norco Back on the Road

Tuesday - Jul 3 - Biking 52 km

Went mountain biking with Rob. We rode out to Bruce pit, then across to Bell, then on towards Kanata to loop through to Shirley's Bay. At about the furthest point we could possibly be from home, Rob's rear derailler exploded in a bunch of broken pieces and twisted metal. He transformed his bike into a single speed and then limped off for a few km to catch a bus back. I continued on to Shirley's Bay and slalomed around a bunch of Army cadets running around in the woods.

Canada Day Weekend

Friday - Jun 29 - Biking 55 km

Rode to work again on the Mikado. Got stuck late waiting for the bank to call me so left at 18:00 and had to boot it downtown to meet Sharon for supper at 19:00. Had a wicked tail wind and rode the distance in just over 50 minutes, arriving 10 minutes early! Went for a midnight bike ride along the canal with Sharon.

Saturday - Jun 30 - Biking 34 km

Went riding around with Sharon for most of the day. Down the canal, back to my place, back to her place, down to the glebe to see a show at Irene's, back to her place, and then finally rode home by myself around 02:00.

Sunday - Jul 1 - Biking 66 km

Rode the Specialized clockwise around the Gatineau parkway loop. Rode to Ilona's for Canada day celebration, then to Karina and Jason's for more Canada celebration and house warming.

Went to leave for work and found my back tire flat. Since I was still at home I just switched over to the Mikado and rode that bike. Turns out the valve stem split on the brand new tube. Worked a little bit later than usual and then rode home with Russ, at least until Moodie where we went our separate ways. That is three bike failures in the past couple of weeks. Prior experience has shown me that these things come in waves of three, so I should not have any more break downs for the next little while.

Wind sped ride to re-Cycles

Tuesday - Jun 19 - Biking 50 km

Rode up to Matt and Adrianne's house which is about 10 km north of Low. The ride up to Wakefield was beautiful, and I plan to make that a more regular route. It got very hot and I went through over 3 liters of water. Took the trans-canada trail from Wakefield, but it is simply a very dusty gravel road, so after about 10 or 15 km of that I switched back across the Gatineau river and got onto the 105 which I rode to Low until the trail actually became a trail. I then followed that until I arrived at the farm.

Sunday - Jun 17 - Biking 68 km, Paddling 2 km

A cooler day to bike home. Rode the trail back to Low and then took the 105 all the way to Wakefield. As I was eating lunch in the park, the steam train passed. From Wakefield I more or less took the same route that I had ridden up on Saturday. Later I went out to visit my dad for Father's Day. Went out for a short paddle with Nick through the swamp.

Replaced the tube, strapped on 5 of the rubbermaid boxes, and rode home.
Saturday - Jun 9 - Biking 6 km

Rode to Ilona's for her 10th wedding anniversary celebration. Stayed way too late and biked home close to 04:00.

Went mountain biking with Rob. This was the first trail ride this year and we just rode up to Gatineau Park, then up to Mackenzie King. Had a brief lunch there and rode home. We took Lac Du Fees Parkway on the way home which is closed for the new highway construction, and used our off road vehicles to go through the construction site instead of taking the detour.

Rode home late at night in a light drizzle and much cooler temperature.

Broken Bike

Monday - June 4 - Biking 37 km

Rode to work in the pouring rain. About 4 km on my way my rear shift cable snapped. Why do I only break things when it is raining? Stopped to replace it on the shore of the Ottawa river. Fought a bit to get the old cable out. Then tried to install a new one. The housing loop to the derailler had started to disintegrate thanks to the top tube cable routing creating a water trap in this piece. I tried to feed a cable through it for 20 minutes, finally giving up as I could not get past a blockage somewhere inside. Decided to simply continue in a single gear. Re-installed the broken cable in the derailler, pulled it tight so I was up on the fifth cog, then tied it off. Rode on. Shortly thereafter, the cable slipped down to 6th gear. Another few 100 m, and I was slipped down to 7th. This was no good, so I stopped, pulled out a screwdriver and adjusted the limit screw to lock it into fifth. The rest of the ride was uneventful. I had three gears by shifting the front. On the way home I discovered I could strap two big rubbermaid containers onto my back rack. This is good because I have a total of 9 of these things to get home. It was still pouring rain. About half way home something felt really weird in the drive system. I thought my chain was about to break, but upon closer inspection I discovered that I had broken a tooth on my middle chain ring. Ignored the problem and finished the ride home where I finally replaced the cable and then decided to leave the chain ring for now until a few more teeth are gone or I get some slippage.

Boobies, Books, and Beer

Friday - Jun 1 - Biking 6 km

Rode a short jaunt up the Gatineau Parkway just past Pink Lake. Passed a big party going on in the park by the river with lots of scantilly clad women and a van painted up as the "Boobie Express". Took me a few minutes to figure it out, but it was a fund raiser for breast cancer research. Rode down to the Book Market with a load of 51 books to sell. They bought 47 of them from me for a grand total of $11. Rode to Defalco's to pick up beer supplies. Rode to Ilona's again for more beer and some yummy nachos while watching the hockey game.

The clan including all my brothers and their partners went hiking in Utah in Zion National Park up the emerald pools trail. This takes you up the side of the mountain past some waterfalls and various pools. The pool at the top is enclosed by some sheer cliffs that tower hundreds of feet above.
Rode downtown in a steady drizzle to meet Sharon for lunch.

Rode up the Gatineau Parkway with Rob and his new bike. It was raining in the morning so we postponed to the afternoon where it was brilliantly sunny and warm enough for t-shirt and shorts. Rob turned around at Pink lake and I continued, completing the entire loop by climbing Fortune and coming back down Champlain. The road was open to cars which was a pain. It usually is not open until mid may.

Rode out to Greenbank road in the morning to get some blood tests run. Showed up at the lab that I normally go to, locked up my bike and walk up to the door. A sign informs me that they have moved to Barrhaven. Got back on my bike and rode to work. Guess I will need to find another clinic.

Thursday - Apr 19 - Biking 53 km

Took the day off because I was flying to Las Vegas in the afternoon. It was a beautiful day so I took a ride up to the Champlain Lookout. Still some snow up at the higher altitudes of Gatineau Park. I had to push my bike through it for about a kilometer, but I persisted and made it all the way to the top.

Sunday - Apr 22 - Hiking 5 km

Drove from Las Vegas to Zion National Park in Utah with Shelly, Laura, and all three of my brothers squashed into a rental car. There we did a short hike through this mountainous desert region. It was raining lightly and fairly cool, but the scenery was spectacular. Will post some pictures once I get a chance.

Was in Quebec City for the weekend so I decided to do a ride around the perimeter of
L'Ile-D'Orleans on Saturday morning. It was cool at around zero degrees, sunny, but very windy. Not wanting to ride any extra distance, I drove the 15 km from our hotel to the island and parked at a tourist office. In the snow filled parking lot, there was a sign indicating that there was a $5 charge for cyclists to park here. I went inside to pay my dues and the woman at the desk said that there would be very few vistors on a day like today, so there would be no charge. The wind was brisk from the west, so I decided to ride counter clockwise so I could take advantage of the tail wind along the long stretch of southern shore. Started off battling the wind for a few km until reaching Ste-Petronille where I turned around. This area of the island was the most pretty with lots of trees growing right up to the edge of the road and stretching over top with their canopy. Old stone houses were nestled throughout the forest. I passed a few people walking along the road. I said 'bonjour' to all, but few acknowledged my existence. The ride along the southern shore was fun. Rolling hills (some of them steep) and a wicked tail wind meant I made it up to St-Francois in little time at all. Here I stopped at a picnic area for a snack. I had to trudge through knee deep snow to get to a picnic table though. The ride back along the north shore was difficult as the wind was brutal. Thankfully I have aero bars which helped a lot on this final stretch. Traffic, vitrually non-existant for most of the day also got heavy the last few kilometers as there was a restaurant in St-Pierre which was absolutely overflowing with visitors.

Rode to check out a house near Carlingwood after supper.

Hauling Clamps and Feeding Cats

Friday - March 30 - Biking 38 km

Rode to work. Took the bikepath in the morning for the first time. Only a few snow patches remain.
On the way home I stopped by Lee Valley to pick up three 36" long clamps. The weight of these hanging far off the end of the rear rack made handling interesting.

Saturday - March 31 - Biking 5 km

Rode to J and K's to feed the cats.

Sunday - April 1 - Biking 5 km, Hiking 6 km

Rode to J and K's to feed the cats. Went hiking with Rob up the Lusk falls trail to the fire tower. The falls were much smaller than last spring. Last year the stream crossing was very difficult due to several meters of deep fast water. This year we stepped across, barely getting our toes wet.

Rode to work in the morning. In the afternoon I rode out to Riverside hospital for a visit to the doctor. The wind was brutal. It took me almost 2 hours to get there. I also felt very tired, which despite the wind, I should not have felt as tired as I did. Then biked to re-Cycles through rush hour traffic. I took Riverside and the Vanier Parkway, which was very unpleasant to ride on due to massive amounts of cars. Will have to find a better route should I ride this way again. After working for 3 hours, I biked home from re-Cycles feeling somewhat ill, and very exhausted. Went to bed with a fever, so that explains the weak feeling while riding.

Conference day

Tuesday - Mar 27 - Biking 42 km

Rode to the Brookstreet hotel for the Synopsys Verification Seminar. Stopped in and my landlord's place to drop of a rent cheque on the way. Biked back to work in the afternoon. Then biked home, stopping at Carlingwood to pick up some paperwork from my doctor. It was warm enough to ride home in shorts. Bikepath is still snowy around Brittania.
